Scholarship Qualifications
In team sports, there are many key elements that have to come together in order to make a successful units. Typically, much of the attention and recognition is focused on the person who scores the most points, runs the fastest, hits the ball farthest, or rushes for the most yards. But just as important are the players who constantly give their best and improve not only themselves, but the team around them. The Scott Gordon Memorial Award is an annual tribute to that type of athlete.
Scott Gordon was a person who exemplified hard work and dedication. He was a basketball player who, though not the most athletically gifted on the court, used desire and willingness to help the team win. Scott was the player that would always "take the charge" or relish the opportunity to defend the opposing team's top scorer. He would make the extra pass to the open man or shoot a high percentage on free throws. He knew his limitations, but never stopped trying to improve. His love of the game and of the Tigers drove him to always give 100% whether he was on the scout team or the main team. Every successful team has someone like Scott, and they almost never get the recognition for their efforts.
With Scott's qualities in mind, the criteria for the Scott Gordon Memorial Award is as follows:
- The athlete is a senior at Waverly Central High School
- The athlete played in one or more sports during his/her high school career.
- The athlete had excellent attendance and always gave 100% in practice and games.
- The athlete never received the "Most Valuable Player" award, but possibly received a "Most Improved" award.
- The athlete was not a starter early in their career, but through hard work and dedication became a starter or major contributor by their senior year.
- The athlete may be named to some All District or All Region teams, but named to an All-State team should disqualify them from consideration.
The Scott Gordon Memorial Award will be chosen by the varsity coaches. Any tie votes will go to the officers of the Scott Gordon Memorial Award.
